The 4%

Poster
A provocative series designed to explore the hot- button issues around the remarkable gender gap in Hollywood. From Alex Gibney’s Jigsaw Productions and featuring contributions from the industry’s most influential actors, directors, producers and critics, these impactful documentary shorts highlight an indisputable reality: female directors are strikingly under-represented in Hollywood. Across the 1,300 top grossing films of 2002 to 2014, only 4.1% of all directors were female. In 85 years, only four women have ever been nominated for a Best Director Oscar – only one, Kathryn Bigelow, has won. Driven by the hard data and supported by human stories and insight from, among others, Judd Apatow, Toni Collette, Anjelica Huston, Michael Mann, Anne Sweeney and Kristen Wiig, The 4% explores the practical obstacles and societal norms that underpin the problem, to uncover the “how” and “why” behind this number. With the support of the Sundance Institute’s Female Filmmakers Initiative, Meryl Streep, Geena Davis, Toni Collette, premium film channel Epix and USC Professor Stacy Smith, these direct, honest, thoughtful, and even funny awareness-raising films will inform, amuse, shock and, potentially, make a difference.
